The ViewBelfast Review
Box is one of Belfast's most exclusive clubs, located in the prestigious Odyssey Arena. It's at the forefront of Northern Irish clubbing, or so it would appear.
The Venue
Sitting proudly on your left as you enter the Odyssey Arena, is Box, a chic, in vogue club built for tomorrow, today. In terms of facilities and design, Box is by far and away the most impressive and progressive club in Belfast, with the retro Volkswagen Campervan situated on the groundfloor, and the pool tables inside, enhancing its uniqueness.
The concept of having a bar downstairs and multiple bars upstairs improves the thoroughfare of drunken students and socialites, meaning no one has to wait too long for their Long Island Ice Tea! There's also a state-of-the-art FogScreen. The sheer size of the club however does make it easy to lose people, and it isn’t uncommon to find yourself wandering around like a lost sheep, part and parcel of a club this size.
The People
Generally this club is very popular with trendy twenty-somethings on the weekends and it is always heaving on a Thursday, student night, with queues snaking round all the way to Bambu Beach Club across the pavilion in the Odyssey. On Thursday there's a very competitive drinks promotion with most priced at £2, which makes everyone happy except the lecturers the next morning.
The Music
This club caters to the masses, with predominantly pop chart tunes being played. Although there is some variety, it's deliberately not too heavily concentrated on any particular genre. Of course this isn’t to everyone’s tastes but with a high quality sound system and two huge dancefloors, there are bound to be some tunes to meet the most discerning of palates.
The Drink
There's nothing weird or wonderful on offer, with a wide variety of bottled beers including Corona and Stella. Box does, to its credit, provide a long list of cocktails including Long Island Ice Tea, Granny Smiths and Sex on the Beach, each constructed with due diligence and precision by the skilled bar staff.
A variety of shots including tequila, sambuca and Aftershock are available for the brave. Most common beers and wines are available and as such the selection and price is pretty good, especially on student nights (£2).
If you're looking for fine wine and articulate conversation serenaded by violins, you won’t find it here but, in terms of their target market, Box more than meets expectations.
The Last Word
No doubt this is the biggest and most impressive club by design, shortcomings lie in the failure to provide specific nights dedicated to specific music - so you won’t be finding the musical purists here. Queuing is another issue but this is testament to Box's popularity. Ultimately this is a trendy, upmarket clubbing experience, unrivalled within Belfast.
