I agree totally with Gerry. We heard good reports about the Mulberry Tree so decided to pay a visit - what a mistake. The food was no better than "canteen quality" the staff were uninterested and quite frankly not the cleanist. Overall not a good experience.
In the evenings it offers good quality bistro style food skilfully cooked by local owner/chef. Excellent value for money as you can take drinks of your own choice with no corkage charge.
Restaurant and facilities are always spotless and parking fairly easy.
Portions are generous and I always eat more than I really should!
By far away the most reliable and pleasurable restaurant to visit in the Downpatrick area.
I was shocked to read the review which i have to completely disagree with. I myself am a 'regular' at the Mulberry Tree and the starters, main course and desserts are better than any other restaurants i have tried. i have dined in restaurants with famous chefs and quite frankly, they don't compare with The Mulberry Tree. The staff may be young, but they are always very courteous and use their own initiative ie they don't need supervised to take an order or clean a table. i always leave feeling full up and it hasn't cost me the earth as i believe the food is good quality and very good value. if you would prefer the chip van round the corner i would question your palate for good quality food.
After hearing good things about Mulberry Tree I booked a christmas lunch. What a disappointment I know Christmas is busy but I was seated upstairs and although the decor is nice the table was filthy with the vinegar bottle covered in food. Then on ordering from the menu of three mains one of them the silverside of beef was sold out so not enough to cover service even though lunch was booked in advance the starter and main was no more than average fayre and that was being generous.
My starter consisted of a large plate of iceberg lettuce with shrimp and a scant amount of mange tout and mango(was meant to be a prawn salad with mango and mange tout) they must have run out of prawns mango and mange tout considering the amount of ice berg lettuce I was served. Then with the main courses we were served a gravy boat that was not of restaurant quality and had lumps. Now to be balanced I must say the desserts were of exceptional quality but the coffee served with then was completely stewed. Maybe it was because of Christmas but that is no excuse for the cleanliness and food quality control but I cannot stress enough that if you here good things about Mulberry Tree try it at you own risk.
Was really looking forward to eating here only to be dissapointed I didnot complain as the waiting staff consisted of young girls who were polite but had no supervision. I will not be giving Mulberry Tree another chance. There is a chip van a few hundred yards down the road who could only serve better food. I suggest you try there I wish I had.
